Atkeison, who is currently serving as the Chief Operating Officer at USA Rugby, will step into the role immediately. This position had been vacant since March following the controversial dismissal of Dr. Noor Mohammad.

Atkeison’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for USA Cricket. The organization is under scrutiny from the International Cricket Council (ICC), which has issued a notice of suspension due to the lack of a full-time CEO and the failure to gain recognition from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).

With 13 years of experience in USA Rugby, Atkeison brings significant administrative expertise. However, he faces the challenge of adapting to the new sport and addressing the internal political issues within USA Cricket. Recently, allegations of corruption and harassment have been made against the board’s chairman and his associates, highlighting the ongoing internal turmoil.

Additionally, Atkeison will need to navigate the complex relationship between USA Cricket and their strategic partner ACE, the owners of Major League Cricket (MLC). The discord between these entities has negatively impacted national players, particularly regarding funding for player contracts.

The position of CEO at USA Cricket has seen high turnover, with previous CEOs, including Iain Higgins, Vinay Bhimjiani, and Dr. Noor Mohammad, leaving amid internal conflicts. Atkeison also inherits a team weakened by the departure of key employees such as Jamie Paul Lloyd and Julia Abbott.

In his first statement as CEO, Atkeison expressed optimism and ambition: “I’m honored to join the team at USA Cricket. It’s an incredible time for the sport here in the United States with the historic performance of the men’s national team in the recent T20 World Cup, the completion of the second season of Major League Cricket, and the first opportunity to showcase cricket in the Olympics here on home soil during the LA28 games. Our goal is to build a world-class organization to capitalize on that momentum, and firmly establish cricket’s position in the American sporting landscape.”

Born on May 1, 1993, in Anand, Gujarat, India, Patel moved to the United States in 2016 and has since become a permanent resident.

Early Cricketing Journey in India

Patel’s cricketing journey began in India, where he played for Gujarat at the under-16 and under-18 levels. After receiving a green card in 2010, he settled in New Jersey and quickly made his mark on the American cricket scene.

Impressive Performances in International Tournaments

In August 2018, Patel was named in the United States squad for the 2018–19 ICC World Twenty20 Americas Qualifier tournament, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer with 208 runs in six matches. His impressive performance continued in the 2018–19 Regional Super50 tournament in the West Indies, where he scored the first century by an American batsman in the tournament and finished as the leading run-scorer for the United States with 290 runs in seven matches.

Debut in T20I and ODI Cricket

Patel’s consistent performances earned him a spot in the United States Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against the United Arab Emirates in February 2019, marking the first T20I fixtures to be played by the United States cricket team. He made his T20I debut against the UAE on March 15, 2019.

In April 2019, Patel was named in the United States cricket team’s squad for the 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament in Namibia, where the team gained One Day International (ODI) status. He made his ODI debut for the United States on April 27, 2019, against Papua New Guinea, in the tournament’s third-place playoff.

Leadership Role and Captaincy

Patel’s leadership qualities were recognized in October 2021 when he was named as the captain of the American squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier tournament in Antigua. In May 2024, he was once again named the captain of the American squad for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament.

Playing Style and Recent Successes

Patel’s batting style is that of a right-handed top-order batsman and wicket-keeper. He has played a crucial role in the United States’ success in recent years, leading the team to victories over Canada and Bangladesh in a bilateral T20 International (T20I) series ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Vision for the 2024 T20 World Cup

Ahead of the team’s clash against Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Patel expressed his team’s vision to qualify for the Super Eights and showcase their talent against top teams in the world. He emphasized the importance of carrying forward the momentum from their first game against Canada and focusing on tackling experienced Pakistani bowlers like Mohammad Amir.

Monank Patel’s journey from Gujarat to becoming the captain of the United States national cricket team is a testament to his dedication, skill, and leadership abilities. As the United States continues to make strides in international cricket, Patel’s role as the team’s captain and star player will be crucial in their quest for success on the global stage.
