Shan Masood sees Babar Azam’s break from Test squad as beneficial

Pakistan’s Test captain Shan Masood believes that Babar Azam’s recent break from the Test squad will ultimately be positive for him. Babar was left out of Pakistan’s lineup for the last two Tests against England after a prolonged lean period, which Pakistan managed to overcome to clinch a 2-1 series win.

“Babar is one of the best in the world,” Masood shared in an interview with BBC Stumped. “Sometimes people need a break, and I think this will actually help him come back as a stronger player.” Masood reassured fans that Babar’s absence from Tests is temporary, as he’s already included in the upcoming white-ball series against Australia.

Masood highlighted Babar’s track record in the white-ball format and his previous success against South Africa in Tests, suggesting this break could help him rediscover his form. “He has gone through a lot and played so much cricket; he’ll always be one of the main batsmen for Pakistan.”

In the broader context of team management, Masood expressed support for the new selection panel and emphasized a collaborative approach. He said the focus was on achieving results for Pakistan cricket rather than individual accolades. “We sat down together and agreed our main goal was taking 20 wickets. It’s always a collective effort, and I’m glad everyone was on the same page,” he said.

Despite recent controversies, including an awkward exchange with commentator Ramiz Raja, Masood maintained a positive outlook. “I’m good at taking constructive criticism. People have every right to ask questions as they see fit,” he added, showing his commitment to representing Pakistan cricket with resilience and grace.
