Former India fast bowler David Johnson has passed away at the age of 52.

“Deepest condolences to family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contributions to the game will always be remembered,” tweeted BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.

David Johnson, a medium-fast bowler, made his mark in Indian cricket during the 1995-96 Ranji Trophy season. He took 23 wickets from five games at an average of 22.86, playing a key role in Karnataka’s tournament victory.

Johnson made his international debut in 1996 in a one-off Test against Australia in Delhi, replacing his injured Karnataka teammate Javagal Srinath. In that match, he took the wicket of Michael Slater, contributing to India’s win. He was later called up for the tour of South Africa, where he played his second and final Test for India at Kingsmead, Durban.

Although his international career was brief, Johnson had a successful first-class career, taking 125 wickets from 39 games at an average of 28.63. He also had the distinction of scoring a first-class century.

David Johnson’s contributions to Indian cricket, both at the domestic and international levels, will be fondly remembered by his teammates and fans. His untimely passing is a significant loss to the cricketing community.
