This comes after a free-wheeling chat between Gambhir and Virat Kohli, where the two discussed various topics, including Gambhir’s near century in the 2011 ODI World Cup final and Kohli’s journey as Test captain, which began when he was just 25.

During the light-hearted conversation, Gambhir teased Kohli about what to ask Rohit in their upcoming chat. Kohli humorously suggested asking Rohit if he managed to eat his soaked almonds in the morning. Gambhir added to the banter by jokingly asking if Rohit will show up on time for the interview, turning 11 AM into 11 PM.

This interview with Rohit will come just before the start of the IND vs BAN Test series, Gambhir’s first home assignment as head coach. India’s Test team, including veterans Kohli and Rohit, gathered in Chennai on September 12 for a preparatory camp. With 10 upcoming Test matches and a potential World Test Championship final on the horizon, the team is preparing for an intense season ahead.

This follows Gambhir’s initial assignment during a white-ball tour in Sri Lanka, but now the real challenge begins with a series of Tests against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia over the coming months.

Ahead of the first Test, Gambhir will address the media in a pre-match press conference, outlining his plans for the series and beyond. He touched upon several key topics, including India’s fast-bowling all-rounder conundrum, praising the likes of Bumrah, Ashwin, and Jadeja, and their impact on changing India’s bowling narrative.

He expressed admiration for Jasprit Bumrah, calling him the best fast bowler across all formats, and highlighted the good relationships he has built with senior players, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ashwin. Gambhir also addressed the team’s selection approach, noting that while certain players like Sarfaraz may have to wait for their turn, opportunities will come.

Additionally, he praised Rishabh Pant for his contributions with both the bat and gloves, emphasizing his importance to the team.

India will look to kick off this crucial series on a positive note as they face a determined Bangladesh side led by Najmul Hossain Shanto.

The team, under coach Gautam Gambhir’s leadership, has performed well in his first assignment, securing the series win with a young squad.

As India prepares for the final match, Gambhir faces a crucial decision: whether to stick with the winning team or give opportunities to other players. Sanju Samson, who replaced Gill in the second match, was dismissed for a golden duck, which raises questions about his place in the lineup if Gill recovers.

If fit, Gill may return to the playing XI, potentially replacing Samson. However, Gambhir might consider giving Samson another chance to prove himself.

India’s predicted XI for the final T20 includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant (wk), Suryakumar Yadav (c), Riyan Parag, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mohammed Siraj. The team aims for a clean sweep, with the spotlight on Shubman Gill’s potential return and Sanju Samson’s performance.

Key Points from the Press Conference:

– Captaincy Decision: Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the captain of the Indian T20 team, with fitness, feedback from the dressing room, and consistent availability being major factors in the decision.
– Agarkar said, “Fitness was a clear challenge and we wanted someone who was likely to be available more often.”
– He added that Yadav is one of the best T20 batters and is expected to play all games as captain.

– Hardik Pandya’s Fitness: Addressing why Pandya was not chosen as captain, Agarkar noted, “Hardik’s skill-sets are difficult to find and fitness is difficult to find. We have got a bit more time and we can look at a few things.”

– KL Rahul’s Exclusion: When asked about former vice-captain KL Rahul being overlooked, Agarkar responded, “I wasn’t there when KL was superseded.”

– T20 Series: The T20 series against Sri Lanka will be held at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on July 27, 28, and 30.

– ODI Series: The ODI series will take place at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on August 2, 4, and 7. Rohit Sharma will return as the ODI team skipper.

– Gambhir on Player Relationships: Gambhir addressed his relationship with Virat Kohli, stating, “My relationship with Virat Kohli is between the two of us and not for TRP.”

– Workload Management: With the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20 Internationals, managing Jasprit Bumrah’s workload has become crucial.
– Gambhir said, “Now that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play only two formats, I expect them to be available for most games.”

– Future Prospects: Gambhir emphasized the importance of discussing and fighting for their jersey, highlighting ongoing discussions and the dedication of players like Kohli and Sharma.

The Indian cricket team is gearing up for an intense series in Sri Lanka, with new leadership and a focus on fitness and availability shaping the squad’s strategy.

Gautam Gambhir is expected to take over as India’s new head coach in late July when the Sri Lanka tour begins. Gambhir, a former Indian cricketer, is currently the leading candidate for the job, surpassing former India women’s coach WV Raman. Meanwhile, VVS Laxman, head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), will lead the young Indian team in the T20I series against Zimbabwe. The squad for this series will be announced on June 22 or 23.

Laxman to Lead Until Gambhir Takes Over

With Rahul Dravid’s tenure ending after the T20 World Cup, VVS Laxman and the NCA support staff will accompany the Indian team. Gambhir’s appointment as head coach is seen as a formality, and he will have ample time to select his own support staff. There are already rumors that Gambhir wants Jonty Rhodes as his fielding coach, but the rest of the coaching staff is yet to be finalized. Gambhir will officially start his new role with the Sri Lanka tour in July.

“There is a possibility that Laxman along with some of the NCA coaches will travel with the new look squad to Zimbabwe. Laxman and the NCA team have always filled in whenever Rahul Dravid and the first team coaches have been taking periodic breaks during their stint,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Leadership in Zimbabwe: Hardik or Surya?

The captain for the India cricket team’s Zimbabwe tour is yet to be decided. Hardik Pandya or Suryakumar Yadav is expected to lead the young team, which will feature many IPL 2024 performers like Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, Harshit Rana, Yash Dayal, Mayank Yadav, Riyan Parag, and Prabhsimran Singh.

Predicted India Squad for Zimbabwe Series

– Ruturaj Gaikwad
– Rinku Singh
– Sanju Samson (wk)
– Abhishek Sharma
– Nitish Reddy
– Riyan Parag
– Rajat Patidar

Indian cricket fans can look forward to an exciting season with new leadership and fresh talent as the team embarks on these international tours.

This move aims to strengthen the structure of the Indian cricket team and ensure continued success on the global stage.

Gautam Gambhir for Head Coach Position

Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir is the frontrunner for the head coach position. He is set to appear for an interview before the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) via Zoom on Tuesday. Gambhir is the sole applicant for the role and will be evaluated by a panel consisting of former cricketers Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshana Naik.

Gambhir, who currently mentors the IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders, has a strong track record in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). His leadership and cricketing insights make him a strong contender to replace the current head coach, Rahul Dravid, whose term ends after the ongoing T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.

Major Changes in BCCI Selection Committee

In addition to the head coach appointment, the BCCI is also set to make significant changes to the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar. The CAC will conduct interviews to find a new selector to replace Salil Ankola. Ankola and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are both from the West Zone, prompting the search for a new selector likely from the North Zone to balance regional representation.

Ajit Agarkar, appointed as the Chairman of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee in July 2023, leads a team that includes Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, and Sridharan Sharath. The selection committee plays a crucial role in shaping the Indian cricket team by selecting members for various levels of representation.

BCCI’s Commitment to Excellence

A BCCI source confirmed the dual focus of the upcoming interviews, stating, “We are conducting an interview session for candidates for the post of head coach and selector. The CAC will submit its recommendation to the BCCI, and the board will make an official announcement thereafter.”

These changes reflect the BCCI’s commitment to strengthening Indian cricket and ensuring it remains competitive on the global stage.
