The first ODI between the two teams ended in a tie, but a Super Over was not used to determine the winner, despite it being an available option.

Why Wasn’t Super Over Used in IND vs SL 1st ODI?

A Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board member has reportedly said that according to the ICC’s December 2023 ODI playing conditions, the Super Over should have been used. The rules clearly state that a tied match should be decided by a Super Over unless conditions do not allow it.

Key Points:

Official’s Statement: An SLC official mentioned that the Super Over option was included in the Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) signed by both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and SLC.

Super Over Rules: As per the ICC rules, a tied match should lead to a Super Over, with the match ending in a tie only if conditions prevent the Super Over.

Future Implications:

Third ODI Considerations: According to The Morning Telegraph, an ICC member has confirmed that a Super Over will be enforced if the third ODI between India and Sri Lanka ends in a tie. This match is crucial for India, who are on the verge of a series defeat and need to win to stay in the competition.

Current Series Standings:

India and Sri Lanka are battling it out in a tightly contested series. With India facing a do-or-die situation, the upcoming matches promise to be intense and closely watched

After a tied game and a 32-run loss, India is on the brink of ending their 27-year dominance over Sri Lanka in ODI cricket. The Lankan Lions are just one win away from securing their first ODI series win against India since 1997.

Current Situation:

Middle-Order Struggles: India’s middle-order has underperformed in the series so far. While Rohit Sharma has set solid foundations with two fifties, players like KL Rahul and Shivam Dube have failed to support him. Rahul scored 31 runs in the first ODI but was dismissed for a duck in the second. Dube showed promise in the first match but struggled against Sri Lankan spin in the second.

Need for Change: Given the conditions in Colombo, which favor spin bowling, there are calls to replace Dube with Riyan Parag. Parag’s spin bowling skills could be an asset on a slow pitch. Additionally, including Rishabh Pant is being considered as a potential replacement for KL Rahul. Pant’s aggressive batting style could provide a much-needed boost.

Predicted India Playing XI for 3rd ODI:

Arshdeep Singh

Fast Bowler

Why Consider Changes?

Spin-Friendly Conditions: With the pitch in Colombo expected to become slower, Riyan Parag’s spin bowling could complement the existing spin options of Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav.

Pant’s Aggression: Rishabh Pant’s aggressive batting might offer a different dynamic, particularly in challenging conditions where quick scoring is crucial.

The final decision on the playing XI will be influenced by the pitch conditions and the team management’s strategy. While KL Rahul’s past performances have been strong, the current situation may call for adjustments to turn the series in India’s favor.

Kohli LBW to spinners in consecutive ODIs

Struggles continue after a month-long break

Jeffrey Vandersay’s impact as Hasaranga’s replacement

Kohli’s Tough Return

Virat Kohli returned from a month-long break for the ODI series to prepare for the Champions Trophy 2025.

Despite a strong start, Kohli was dismissed for 24 by Wanindu Hasaranga in the first match, which ended in a tie.

This marked the first time Kohli was adjudged LBW to spinners in back-to-back innings in ODIs.

Challenges Against Spin

Kohli has an impressive average of 70.4 against leg spin in ODIs, with a strike rate of 102.4.

Despite these stats, he has struggled in the current series, highlighting the unpredictable nature of cricket.

Vandersay Steps Up

With Hasaranga ruled out, Jeffrey Vandersay was brought in as a replacement.

Vandersay, returning to the team after last playing against Zimbabwe in January, made a significant impact.

Player of the Match: Jeffrey Vandersay

Vandersay’s Comments:

Felt pressure coming into the side after a layoff.

Credited the batters for posting 240 runs, allowing him to bowl in good areas.

Gained confidence after his first wicket and ended with six wickets.

Match Impact

Vandersay’s performance played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s success.

Kohli’s continued struggles against spin are a concern for India as they prepare for future ICC events.

Series Outlook

With Vandersay stepping up, Sri Lanka has found a reliable replacement for Hasaranga.

India needs to address their batting issues against spin to bounce back in the series.

Once a key all-rounder for India across all formats, Jadeja is not part of the ongoing series.

Jadeja’s last major international outing was during the T20 World Cup, where he struggled with both bat and ball, scoring only 35 runs and taking just one wicket in seven games. This led to his retirement from T20Is.

With the current ODI series being an important preparation for next year’s Champions Trophy, some fans wondered if Jadeja’s omission signaled the end of his international career. However, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that Jadeja has not been dropped.

Agarkar explained that with Axar Patel already in the squad and the series being just three games long, there was no need to include both all-rounders. He assured fans that Jadeja remains in consideration for future matches.

India’s upcoming schedule includes home series against Bangladesh and England, followed by a tour to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Jadeja’s performance in these matches will be crucial as he aims to secure a place in the Champions Trophy next year.

IND vs SL ODI Series Schedule:

1st ODI: August 2, R. Premadasa Stadium

2nd ODI: August 4, R. Premadasa Stadium

3rd ODI: August 7, R. Premadasa Stadium

When Shivam Dube bowled a wide delivery to Nissanka, India appealed for a catch behind. Dube was convinced, but KL Rahul wasn’t so sure. Rohit Sharma discussed it with Rahul and they decided not to review.

During this exchange, KL Rahul quipped, “IPL wala rule hai kya?” which roughly translates to, “Is there an IPL rule to DRS?” The ball had angled down the leg side and missed Nissanka’s bat, only flicking his thigh pad. Though it was clearly not a wide, such a call can’t be overturned with a review.

With the recent update in ICC Rules, players are allowed to challenge against wide and no-ball with the DRS.

Kohli’s Return and India’s ODI Series Preparation

India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, recently secured a 3-0 victory in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. Now, the team shifts focus to the ODI format, where Kohli’s experience and skill are expected to play a crucial role. A video from a recent training session shows Kohli practicing with characteristic finesse, driving a full-length delivery with precision. His commitment to preparation, as seen in the intense training sessions, underscores his dedication to the team.

Kohli’s inclusion in the squad is seen as a significant boost for India’s morale and batting strength as they gear up for the series.

Despite needing only 30 runs from the last 30 balls with nine wickets in hand, Sri Lanka faltered once more, setting the stage for a tense finish. Who would have thought that Rinku Singh and Surya Kumar would bowl the 19th and 20th overs of the match and would concede only 8 runs?

As the Super Over began, Sri Lanka batted first, sending Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis to face Washington Sundar. However, their innings unraveled quickly:

1. Ball 1: Washington Sundar to Kusal Mendis – A wide delivery started the over, followed by a single as Mendis swept the ball through midwicket.

2. Ball 2: Washington Sundar to Kusal Perera – Sundar pulled back his length, and Perera’s attempt to pull ended with a catch to Bishnoi at deep backward square leg. Perera departed for 0.

3. Ball 3: Washington Sundar to Pathum Nissanka – Nissanka aimed to slogsweep but only managed to find Rinku Singh at deep midwicket. Nissanka’s departure for 0 left Sri Lanka reeling at 2/2.

Sri Lanka finished the Super Over with just 2 runs, setting a modest target for India. The Indian team, with Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill, needed just 3 runs to win. Maheesh Theekshana took the ball for Sri Lanka, but India quickly wrapped up the game:

1. Ball 1: Theekshana to Suryakumar Yadav – Suryakumar Yadav sealed the victory for India with a four, driving the ball elegantly to the boundary.

This game will be remembered for its unexpected turns and the high-pressure moments that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Despite needing just 30 runs off the last 30 balls with nine wickets in hand, Sri Lanka faltered, managing only a tie by the end of their innings.

The match took a turn in the last two overs, with Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh playing crucial roles. Suryakumar, bowling the final over, needed to defend six runs but managed to keep his nerve, taking two wickets and conceding only five runs.

The penultimate over by Rinku Singh was equally decisive. He conceded just three runs and took two key wickets, including that of Kusal Perera, who had scored a well-paced 46 off 34 balls. The pressure mounted as Sri Lanka required nine runs from the final 12 balls, but a series of wickets and tight bowling brought the match to a dramatic climax.

The game reached the Super Over, with Sri Lanka batting first. Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis, their top-scorers, stepped up to face Washington Sundar. The Indian side, led by Sanju Samson, looked to contain the runs and set a manageable target for their own batsmen.
