The announcement was made by MCA Secretary Abhay Hadap during a felicitation ceremony at Wankhede Stadium on Monday, where the players were honored for their outstanding performance.

Mumbai’s Victory in the Irani Trophy

Mumbai clinched the Irani Cup title after drawing the match against the Rest of India team but securing the win based on their higher first-innings score. Sarfaraz Khan played a pivotal role with a massive knock of 222 runs, helping Mumbai post a total of 537 in their first innings. Rest of India responded with 416 runs, but Mumbai’s first-innings lead ensured their victory.

Ajinkya Rahane on the Final-Day Pressure

Mumbai’s captain, Ajinkya Rahane, revealed that the final day’s first session was particularly tense, with the team struggling at 153-6. Both Rahane and head coach Omkar Salvi were under immense pressure, but the lower-order performances helped steer the team to victory.

Kotian and Avasthi Save the Day

The turning point came when spin all-rounder Tanush Kotian scored an unbeaten 114, while Mohit Avasthi contributed a crucial 51*, securing a first-innings lead and ultimately sealing Mumbai’s victory. Their efforts helped Mumbai maintain their dominant run in domestic cricket.

By stumps, Mumbai stood at 536 for 9, with Sarfaraz anchoring the innings through substantial partnerships and aggressive stroke play.

Key Moments of the Day

Strong Start with Rahane and Sarfaraz: Continuing from their overnight score of 237/4, Rahane and Sarfaraz kept the pressure on ROI’s bowlers, building a 131-run stand. Rahane missed a century, falling to a short delivery at 97, while Sarfaraz carried on, reaching his double-ton.

Sarfaraz’s Masterclass: His 276-ball knock featured 25 fours and two sixes, marked by partnerships of 131 runs with Rahane and 83 runs with Kotian. Sarfaraz survived a dropped catch on 91 and quickly converted that chance into a hundred in the following over.

Kotian’s Supporting Act: Kotian’s patient fifty (104 balls) and partnership with Sarfaraz allowed Mumbai to have a wicketless second session, adding crucial runs and keeping up the momentum.

Late Flourish with Thakur: Shardul Thakur’s 73-run partnership with Sarfaraz helped the latter reach his 200. Both batters attacked Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar, finding the boundary with ease before Thakur was bowled out in the final over of the day.

Mumbai’s Innings Summary

Mumbai’s steady batting ensured they piled on runs, ending Day 2 at 536 for 9. Sarfaraz’s double-hundred was the highlight, while Rahane narrowly missed a ton. Kotian’s support and partnerships throughout the day kept ROI bowlers under pressure.

Brief Scores: Mumbai 536/9 (Sarfaraz Khan 221*, Ajinkya Rahane 97, Tanush Kotian 64; Mukesh Kumar 4-109) vs Rest of India.

Musheer was traveling from his hometown, Azamgarh, to Lucknow on Friday when his SUV collided with a median and toppled. He was on his way to play in the Irani Cup, which is set to begin on October 1.

The incident took place as Musheer was traveling with his father and two others. He was taken to a hospital and treated for a concussion. While the full extent of his injuries is yet to be determined, it is likely that he will also miss the initial rounds of the Ranji Trophy.

Musheer is expected to be flown back to Mumbai for further evaluation at a BCCI-approved hospital. The BCCI and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) medical panel have been informed about his condition and are monitoring the situation closely.

Musheer was scheduled to represent Mumbai in the Irani Cup match against the Rest of India team at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium. His injury is a setback, especially given his strong performance in first-class cricket, including three centuries and a half-century in just nine games. Earlier this season, he scored 181 in the Duleep Trophy against a strong India A attack.

Meanwhile, his brother, Sarfaraz Khan, who is also an India batter, has been released from the Test squad to participate in the Irani Cup. The Mumbai Cricket Association is yet to announce a replacement for Musheer in the Ajinkya Rahane-led squad.

It was first introduced in the 1959-60 season to mark the 25th anniversary of the Ranji Trophy, and due to its popularity, it became a regular fixture from 1962 onwards.

The match is named in honor of Z.R. Irani, who was an important figure in Indian cricket, serving as the treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and later its president. The Irani Cup is unique because it pits the best domestic team (the Ranji champions) against a team composed of standout players from other states, offering a highly competitive fixture.

What Makes It Special?

The Irani Cup serves as a showcase for top domestic talent, especially those who are knocking on the doors of the national team. The Rest of India (ROI) team consists of players from across various state teams who have performed exceptionally well in the domestic circuit. This format provides a platform for players to display their skills against the champions of the Ranji Trophy, making it a high-stakes, competitive encounter.

Historical Significance

The tournament is one of the most sought-after domestic trophies in India, with a long history of elite cricketers participating. It has also served as a stage for players to push for national selection and a platform for those returning from injury to prove their fitness. Over the years, many top cricketers have used the Irani Cup as a stepping stone to national glory.

Recent Developments

The latest edition of the Irani Cup will see Mumbai, the current Ranji Trophy champions, take on the Rest of India from October 1 to October 5 at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium. In recent years, teams like Vidarbha, Karnataka, and Saurashtra have emerged as strong contenders, making the competition more exciting.

The last edition, held in 2023/24, saw the Rest of India defeat Saurashtra, continuing a trend where the Rest of India team has often come out on top in these high-profile matches.

Key Features of the Irani Cup:

Established: 1959-60

Format: One-off first-class match

Teams: Ranji Trophy champions vs Rest of India (ROI)

Named after: Z.R. Irani, a former BCCI president and treasurer

Purpose: To celebrate Ranji Trophy winners and give top domestic players more exposure

Recent Winner: Rest of India (2023/24) against Saurashtra

Notable Moments:

The competition was initially designed as a one-time celebration but became an annual fixture due to its popularity.

Bombay (now Mumbai) has been the most successful team historically, with multiple victories.

The match has been cancelled or postponed a few times, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With such a rich history and fierce competition, the Irani Cup remains one of the most anticipated events in Indian domestic cricket.

The match is scheduled to take place from October 1 to 5 in Lucknow, with Ajinkya Rahane leading the Mumbai side. Rahane, who captained Mumbai to their 42nd Ranji Trophy victory earlier this year, will once again take charge of the team.

Shardul Thakur’s return comes as a significant boost to the squad. The India all-rounder, who has been recovering from an ankle surgery since June, recently participated in the KSCA tournament and has made himself available for the five-day fixture. The full Mumbai squad is expected to be announced soon.

Shreyas Iyer, who is eyeing a comeback to the Indian national team, will also play in this prestigious domestic fixture. Iyer has been out of the international spotlight after missing out on selection for the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh. The Irani Cup could be a crucial opportunity for him to impress selectors ahead of upcoming international matches.

New National Cricket Academy to Be Unveiled on September 28

In other news, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the new National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru will be inaugurated on September 28. The state-of-the-art facility will feature three world-class playing grounds, 45 practice pitches, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and top-tier training and recovery facilities. This new academy is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Indian cricket.

The inauguration will take place just a day before BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which is also set to be held in Bengaluru.
