The Suryakumar Yadav-led side, fresh off a comfortable victory in Gwalior, is looking to seal the series with another strong performance at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Team’s Arrival in Delhi A video shared by the BCCI captured the team’s journey from Gwalior to Delhi, with smiles all around. Suryakumar Yadav, known for his light-hearted nature, kept the mood lively, exchanging jokes with the paparazzi. Bowling coach Morne Morkel also joined in the fun, humorously commenting on the team’s busy schedule. The mood in the camp was clearly upbeat following their convincing performance in the opening match.

India’s Dominance in the 1st T20I In the first encounter, India outclassed Bangladesh in all departments. Varun Chakravarthy and Arshdeep Singh were the stars with the ball, each taking three wickets, while Hardik Pandya and Mayank Yadav chipped in to restrict Bangladesh to 127 runs.

India’s batting was equally impressive, with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma giving the team a flying start. Suryakumar Yadav’s quick-fire cameo demonstrated his signature 360-degree shots, while Hardik Pandya finished off the match in style, making sure India cruised to victory with ease.

As the team gears up for the 2nd T20I in Delhi, they will be aiming to secure the series with another solid performance.

The Mumbai Indians have reportedly finalized their retention list ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction, with the auction likely to take place in December. The team is set for a significant leadership change as Suryakumar Yadav is expected to take over as captain, replacing Hardik Pandya.

Mumbai Indians’ Retention Strategy

While the official retention rules are yet to be announced by the BCCI, reports indicate that most franchises are looking to retain at least five players to secure the core of their teams. In the previous mega auction, franchises were allowed to retain up to four players. The rules for the 2025 auction are anticipated to be announced by the end of September.

According to RevSportz‘s Rohit Juglan, Mumbai Indians have finalized their list of retained players. Jasprit Bumrah is the first retention, with Suryakumar Yadav being the second and also set to lead the side in IPL 2025. Suryakumar’s appointment as captain comes after a disappointing performance by Hardik Pandya in the last season, where Mumbai finished at the bottom of the table.

Leadership Change

Suryakumar Yadav’s appointment is also seen as a reflection of his growing stature in Indian cricket, having recently been named India’s T20 captain. Despite Hardik being a strong candidate to replace Rohit Sharma, the team management opted for Suryakumar to take on the leadership role for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. Hardik, who was brought back to Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024 through a trade deal with Gujarat Titans, was unable to lead the team to success last season.

Rohit or Hardik to Be Released

While the first two retentions are confirmed as Bumrah and Suryakumar, Juglan mentioned that Mumbai Indians have retained one more player, though the identity remains undisclosed. This leaves a big question mark over the future of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya with the franchise. With only one spot left, either one or possibly both of them could be released ahead of the auction.

Juglan teased the final retention by saying, “Bumrah first retention, Suryakumar Yadav (C) 👀 Now wait for the last one.”

Bumrah first retention
SuryaKumar Yadav (C)
👀
Now wait for the last one

— रोहित जुगलान Rohit Juglan (@rohitjuglan) September 27, 2024

As the mega auction approaches, the changes in Mumbai Indians’ strategy and leadership mark a new era for the five-time champions as they aim to rebuild and regain their winning form.

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has been ruled out of the first round of the Duleep Trophy 2024 due to a thumb injury. Yadav, who recently made a return to domestic cricket, sustained the injury while fielding during the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament. His time in the tournament was cut short after facing just 38 balls.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Yadav sprained his right thumb, which has sidelined him from the opening round of the Duleep Trophy. Medical evaluations are currently ongoing, and a decision on his availability for the next round will be made after further assessments next week.

Yadav’s absence has been a disappointment for fans who were eager to see him perform in the prestigious domestic tournament.

In addition to Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, another key player, has also been ruled out of the first round of the Duleep Trophy. Kishan suffered a groin injury during the Buchi Babu tournament, which has led to his withdrawal.

Both players’ injuries have raised concerns, and their fitness will be closely monitored as the tournament progresses.

Known for his innovative batting, Yadav has also shown his skills as a captain, especially in T20Is.

T20 International (T20I) Captaincy

Yadav began his official T20I captaincy career with a commanding 3-0 series win against Sri Lanka. Since then, he has led India in 10 T20I matches, securing eight wins and suffering only two losses, giving him an impressive win rate of 80%. This includes a notable 4-1 series victory over Australia post the 2023 World Cup.

Ranji Trophy Leadership

In domestic cricket, Yadav has captained Mumbai in the prestigious Ranji Trophy. However, his record here has been more modest. In six matches, he has achieved one win, with three draws and two losses, resulting in a win percentage of 16.66%.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Performance

Yadav has also led Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s premier domestic T20 competition. Out of 16 matches under his captaincy, Mumbai won 10, giving him a win percentage of 62.5%.

Indian Premier League (IPL) Experience

In the IPL, Yadav has typically played under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and now Hardik Pandya. He has captained in just one IPL match, which ended in a victory, maintaining a perfect record in the league.

The most notable change has been the appointment of Suryakumar Yadav as the new captain. Yadav, who is not only Gambhir’s preferred choice but also a standout performer, is stepping into the leadership role with high expectations.

Yadav’s rise to captaincy was not solely based on his memorable catch in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa. While that moment showcased his exceptional skills, his consistent performances and leadership potential have been key factors in his selection. Despite other strong contenders like Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill, Yadav’s form and ability to inspire his team made him the ideal choice.

In his debut as captain, Suryakumar Yadav delivered a commendable performance. He scored a solid fifty in the opening match, demonstrating his ability to lead by example. His performance not only solidifies his position as captain but also shows promise for India’s future in the T20 format under his leadership.

As Gambhir’s new era begins with these changes, all eyes will be on how this revamped team, led by Yadav, performs in upcoming matches. The early signs are positive, and fans are eagerly anticipating how the new leadership will shape India’s cricketing journey.

This decision has sparked debate, especially considering the ongoing discussions about Mumbai Indians’ leadership.

Yadav, who has been a standout player for Mumbai Indians, was initially a contender for the captaincy role alongside Jasprit Bumrah before Hardik Pandya’s arrival at the franchise. To the surprise of many, Mumbai Indians chose Pandya as the captain over Yadav before the IPL 2024 auction, a move that raised eyebrows among fans and experts alike.

Suryakumar Yadav, known for his dynamic batting style, has only captained India in T20Is on a temporary basis. Despite not being the permanent captain, he has stepped in successfully, leading India to notable victories. His record in T20Is is impressive, with five wins out of seven matches. Notably, Yadav led India to a 4-1 series win against Australia following the 2023 World Cup.

As Yadav prepares to lead the Indian team, questions about his future role with Mumbai Indians and how he will perform compared to Pandya continue to be a topic of interest.

Gaurav Kapur’s Unexpected Question

During the event, presenter Gaurav Kapur made an unexpected reference to a video that went viral earlier in 2024. The video showed Rohit Sharma uttering the iconic one-liner “koi bhi garden mein nahi ghoom” during the home Test series against England.Kapur, taking advantage of India’s unbeaten run to the T20 World Cup title, asked Rohit: “You have become the first team to win the men’s T20 World Cup undefeated. You did not lose a single game. It was a complete team effort. Is it safe to say ek bhi mein koi ek minute keliye garden mein nahi ghooma?”

Rohit’s Reaction and Teammates’ Laughter

Rohit burst into laughter as the crowd at Wankhede went berserk, while Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, who were seated in front of the stage, could not stop laughing as well. The unexpected reference to the viral video caught Rohit off guard, leaving him speechless for a brief moment.

Rohit’s Dedication of the Trophy

Despite the humorous moment, Rohit, who lifted the T20 World Cup trophy for the second time in his career, dedicated the title to the entire nation.”Firstly… since we came to India, it’s been wonderful. The reception we’ve received here tells you the kind of enthusiasm people had for this trophy. Yes, of course, it means so much for us but it’s for the entire nation. Along with all the players who have represented the country, I think the people who’ve been wanting us to win the trophy, it [trophy] belongs to them,” Rohit said. The felicitation ceremony was part of the grand welcome the Indian team received upon their return to India after winning the T20 World Cup in the West Indies. The team met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi before traveling to Mumbai for the open-bus road show and the Wankhede Stadium event.

India, after posting a challenging total of 181 runs, showcased relentless bowling prowess to restrict Afghanistan’s chase. Bumrah’s pivotal dismissals, including the early removal of Gurbaz, set the tone for India’s defensive strategy. Axar Patel’s economical overs further tightened the screws on Afghanistan, preventing any significant partnership from flourishing.

Suryakumar Yadav, reflecting on his impactful innings, remarked on the importance of clarity and execution in his batting approach. “There’s a lot of hard work and routine involved. I’m clear in my mind about my game plan,” Yadav stated after his standout performance.

With this commanding win, India has positioned itself strongly in the race for a spot in the T20 World Cup semifinals, signaling their intent to go all the way in the tournament. Despite the promising start, the team remains focused on the challenges ahead in the competitive Super 8 stage.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s gritty performance in the third Test against England showcased his resilience and talent. Despite battling back spasms, he displayed remarkable determination to slam a gritty 150, demonstrating his ability to switch gears from Test cricket to T20 mode seamlessly. His century in the second innings, achieved in just 122 deliveries, underscored his exceptional batting prowess.

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan etched his name in the annals of history by becoming one of the few debutants to score half-centuries in both innings of their first Test match. Following his impressive knock of 62 in the first innings, Sarfaraz showcased his consistency with another stellar innings of 68 runs in the second innings.

Both Jaiswal and Sarfaraz honed their skills in the competitive environment of Mumbai’s domestic cricket circuit.
