India’s star cricketer, Rishabh Pant, has revealed a key strategy that helped India secure their second ICC T20 World Cup title. According to Pant, a clever plan of slowing down the game by “wasting time” proved to be instrumental in breaking South Africa’s momentum during the intense final match at Barbados.

In a crucial moment of the game, South Africa needed just 30 runs from 30 balls, and Heinrich Klaasen was steering them toward victory. That’s when Pant initiated his “time-wasting” strategy, which he now credits as a turning point for India’s victory.

“I was thinking about how the momentum had suddenly shifted in their favor. I knew it was now or never, and I told the physio to take his time and keep wasting time,” Pant said, describing how this tactic slowed down the pace of the game. The moment came when Axar Patel had just been hit hard by the South African batsmen, and the pressure was on India.

Pant pretended to be injured, lying down on the field, while the physio taped his knee—slowing down the game. He admitted it was all an act, aimed at disrupting South Africa’s rhythm. “The physio asked if I was okay, and I told him I was just acting. Sometimes these tactics work in critical moments,” Pant explained.

This tactic shifted the game’s momentum back in India’s favor, and soon South Africa began to lose wickets. Pant’s move proved to be a game-changer, as it broke the Proteas’ rhythm and ultimately helped India pull off a stunning comeback to lift the ICC T20 World Cup trophy.

Pant’s strategic thinking, combined with Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliant catch, was critical in India’s victory, marking a historic moment for the team as they claimed their second T20 World Cup title.

The incident occurred during a series against New Zealand, where Gardner collided with teammate Georgia Wareham while attempting to catch the ball. As a precaution, the team has decided to eliminate any activity that poses a risk of head injury ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Gardner, who has a history of concussions, initially brushed off the collision but later became emotional, fearing another head injury, which would have been her eighth. Although ruled out of the first T20I, she made a strong comeback in the second match, claiming 3 wickets for 16 runs and helping Australia secure a 29-run victory over New Zealand.

Despite a batting collapse in the second T20I, where Australia lost their last seven wickets for just 28 runs, Gardner’s performance with the ball ensured a win. She has now called on her team’s batters to step up in the final match, urging them to post a formidable total if they bat first in Brisbane.

Raj shared her optimism for the Indian team’s chances, stating, “Our team has the advantage because the UAE conditions are similar to what we’re used to.” However, she also acknowledged the competitive nature of the tournament, noting that all teams will come well-prepared for the World Cup.

While India is yet to win a senior ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Raj highlighted the team’s progress, including their recent Under-19 World Cup victory. She emphasized that despite their strength, the Indian side cannot afford to underestimate their rivals, especially after their unexpected loss in the Asia Cup earlier this year.

Mithali concluded, “The World Cup means every team comes well-prepared. I hope India can make the most of the UAE conditions, but we have to remember that anything can happen on the day.”

This decision follows a virtual International Cricket Council (ICC) Board meeting held on Tuesday.

Reasons for Relocation

Current Situation in Bangladesh:

Bangladesh has been facing significant internal unrest, including student protests and political instability. The ongoing violence and recent fatalities have raised concerns about the safety and appropriateness of hosting the tournament in the country.

Feedback from Board Members:

The majority view from the ICC Board was that the event could not be held in Bangladesh under the current circumstances. Concerns were highlighted about the impact of hosting the tournament amidst such turmoil.

Player Concerns:

Australia’s Alyssa Healy voiced her discomfort with playing in Bangladesh at this time. She expressed that hosting the World Cup there could divert resources away from addressing the country’s pressing issues.

Decision and Next Steps

Agreement to Shift:

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reportedly agreed to the shift of the tournament to the UAE while continuing as the official host.

Alternative Locations:

The UAE emerged as the preferred choice due to its favorable weather conditions and similar time zone to Bangladesh. Although Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka had shown interest, the UAE was deemed the most suitable option.

BCCI’s Stance:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declined to host the tournament due to weather concerns and the proximity of the Women’s ODI World Cup next year.

It’s a historic clash between two undefeated teams with contrasting stories. India aims to solidify its dominance in T20 cricket while South Africa yearns to break its World Cup jinx. The showdown on June 29th at the iconic Kensington Oval in Barbados promises to be a thrilling spectacle.

India’s path to the final has been dominant. They kicked off their campaign with an 8-wicket victory over Ireland, followed by wins against Pakistan, the United States, and Afghanistan. Even a rain-affected match against Canada couldn’t slow them down. In the Super 8 stage, India continued their winning streak by beating Bangladesh and Australia. Their semi-final clash against England showcased their strength in both batting and bowling. Rohit Sharma’s crucial fifty and the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel secured a 68-run victory.

South Africa’s journey was more challenging. They faced close calls against Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The turning point came in the Super 8 stage with dominant victories over the USA, England, and West Indies. In their semi-final against Afghanistan, South Africa’s powerful bowling attack restricted their opponents to just 56 runs and chased down the target in 8.5 overs.

Captain Rohit Sharma is now just one win away from fulfilling his dream of lifting a World Cup as a captain.

This comes after the disappointment of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Although Rohit has previously hoped to win an ODI World Cup, he can find comfort if India overcomes South Africa on June 29 in Barbados.

Both teams have reached the final without losing a game. South Africa is on an eight-match winning streak while India has won seven consecutive matches.

A major concern for India is Virat Kohli’s form in the tournament. In seven innings, Kohli has not surpassed the 100-run mark. His highest score so far is 37 runs, which is below his usual performance.

Despite this, Kohli remains the highest run-scorer in T20 World Cup history. Rohit Sharma, who has been in excellent form, is just five runs behind Kohli’s record.

In a surprising turn of events, South Africa head coach Rob Walter found himself addressing an almost empty room at the pre-match press conference.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Walter made light of the situation, joking about the lack of attendees. “This is an empty hall, which is a good sign, I think. It’s not really about the press but about the occasion, isn’t it?” he quipped, trying to keep the mood light despite the unusual circumstance.

The Proteas are set to face Afghanistan, considered the underdogs, in a highly anticipated match. Despite the low turnout at the press conference, the focus remains on the upcoming clash and the opportunity for South Africa to advance to the finals.

This unexpected turn of events is particularly beneficial for India’s key bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, who are crucial for the team’s success in the T20 World Cup.

Why No Play in Florida is Good News for India?

A flash flood followed by continuous rain in Florida disrupted many group stage matches at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium. The wet outfield forced the cancellation of two games – Pakistan vs Ireland and India vs Canada. Despite the ground staff’s efforts, the field was unplayable, highlighting the stadium’s inadequate facilities.

For India, this cancellation is a blessing in disguise. The bowlers did not have to risk playing in such treacherous conditions, especially Jasprit Bumrah, who has a history of injuries. Bumrah’s struggle with a lower back stress fracture, which resurfaced after initially occurring in 2019, kept him out for a significant period in 2022-2023. After undergoing surgery in March 2023 and four months of rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, he made his comeback in August 2023. Since then, the management has been cautious about his workload to prevent further injuries.

With India progressing to the Super 8 stage, the team, led by Rohit Sharma, aims to maintain their form and fitness. Avoiding unnecessary risks, especially with key players like Bumrah and Pandya, is crucial for India’s campaign. The team’s next challenges will be against Afghanistan on June 20, potentially Bangladesh on June 22, and Australia on June 24. If they reach the semi-finals, they will play on June 27.

This break allows the players to stay fresh and injury-free, providing India with a better chance to perform at their best in the upcoming crucial matches.

In response to a lawsuit filed by official broadcaster Star Sports India, the court has restrained several websites from illegally disseminating cricket matches on their platforms.

Court Order to Protect Broadcasting Rights

The court emphasized the need for swift action to protect the broadcaster’s investment in the T20 World Cup and uphold copyright protections. The judgement stated, “Swift action to prevent such infringements is crucial to preserving the plaintiff’s investment in the broadcasting rights and maintaining their copyright protection.”

The court order specifically prohibits defendants from streaming or making available any part of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 without authorization. This includes any form of electronic or digital platform.

Measures Against Unauthorized Access

In addition to restraining the websites, the court has directed internet and telecom service providers to block access to these unauthorized streaming sites, ensuring that the official broadcaster’s rights are safeguarded.

This ruling underscores the importance of protecting intellectual property rights and maintaining the integrity of sports broadcasting.

In a delightful moment, two of India’s greatest cricketers were spotted attending a spiritual gathering or ‘satsang’ in the city. Kohli was possibly accompanied by his wife Anushka Sharma for the event.

The reunion sent the internet into a frenzy as fans captured this rare instance of the legends posing together. The image, shared by renowned sports journalist Vikram Sathaye, quickly went viral.

This marks the first public appearance of Kohli and Tendulkar together since the 2023 World Cup semi-final. Their sighting brought back memories of Kohli breaking Tendulkar’s record for most ODI centuries during that match.

While it’s unclear if they discussed cricket, fans speculated about potential advice from Tendulkar to Kohli. The latter has struggled as an opener in the T20 World Cup despite his recent IPL success.

Kohli’s low scores against Ireland and Pakistan have raised concerns. However, India’s management seems likely to persist with him at the top, banking on his experience and past achievements.

The decision came following concerns raised by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s chief, Mohsin Naqvi, regarding the long distance between their previous hotel and the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

Responding to Naqvi’s reservations, the International Cricket Council (ICC) swiftly arranged for the Pakistan team’s accommodation to be relocated just five minutes away from the Nassau Stadium. This move aims to facilitate the team’s logistics, especially considering their tight schedule with matches against India on June 9 and Canada on June 11.

It’s worth noting that Pakistan isn’t the only team to voice concerns about their accommodations in New York. Both South Africa and Sri Lanka have expressed dissatisfaction with their hotels. In contrast, the India cricket team was already situated in a hotel merely 10 minutes away from Nassau Stadium.

However, the initial decision to place Pakistan’s team farther away from the stadium was likely a precautionary measure in response to a terror threat surrounding the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match. Given past incidents and the importance of security, authorities might have opted for a more distant location to ensure the safety of the players and staff.
