Team India faces uncertainty in Barbados due to hurricane threat
Team India, celebrating their 2024 T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados, faces an uncertain return home as Hurricane Beryl threatens the island. Originally scheduled to depart on Monday, the team’s plans have been thrown into disarray due to the impending storm.
Hurricane Beryl is expected to hit Barbados late Sunday or early Monday, prompting authorities to announce the closure of Grantley Adams International Airport by nighttime Sunday. This closure poses a serious challenge for Team India’s departure, leaving them potentially stranded on the island for up to 48 hours.
In response to the looming threat, authorities have arranged a special chartered flight to airlift the Indian contingent directly to New Delhi. However, the timing remains uncertain, raising concerns about their ability to depart before the airport shuts down.
Compounding the situation, the hotel where Team India is currently lodged, the Hilton Barbados Resort, is located near the coast and could be directly impacted by the Category 3 hurricane. Contingency plans include possibly relocating to safer accommodations to weather the storm safely.
The Indian contingent comprises 70 individuals, including players, their families, team officials, and support staff. Their safety and well-being are paramount amid the impending natural disaster.
As the situation unfolds, Team India remains hopeful for a swift and safe return home following their historic victory, amidst the challenges posed by Hurricane Beryl.
