Yuzvendra Chahal eyes Test spot after successful county cricket stint

Yuzvendra Chahal, India’s star leg-spinner, is aiming for a spot in India’s Test squad against England following a stellar performance in county cricket. After an impressive debut season with Northamptonshire CCC, Chahal is now back in India to prepare for the Ranji Trophy, which begins on October 11. The spinner showcased his talent during his county stint, taking 24 wickets at an average of 17, including three five-wicket hauls and two four-wicket hauls, establishing himself as a strong overseas signing.
Chahal, in an interview with Times of India, said, “County cricket is tough. It gave me an opportunity to showcase my skills against a very good standard of cricket. With India touring England next year, I wanted to prove my capabilities.” His successful county season could enhance his chances of being considered for the Indian Test squad in the England tour of 2025.
County Cricket: A Stepping Stone for Indian Players
For Indian cricketers, county cricket has become an essential platform to refine their skills. Players like Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Washington Sundar, Prithvi Shaw, and Chahal have used this platform to either reclaim or secure their spot in the Indian national team.

Despite his significant contributions to white-ball cricket, Chahal is yet to make his Test debut for India. At 34, he remains focused on earning a spot in the Test team, displaying determination and a hunger to represent India in the longest format of the game.

Chahal expressed gratitude to Brindon Bagirathan for opening the door to county cricket. He also appreciated the guidance of Rajasthan Royals’ coaches who connected him with 18-year-old cricketer Krish Patel, who is regarded as a promising talent. Chahal expressed his willingness to support Patel’s journey to international cricket, stating, “If I can help, I am always there.”
With his sights set on a place in India’s Test team, Chahal is looking to use his recent county experience to prove his readiness for the upcoming challenges on English soil.
