BCCI considering IPL-style league for retired cricket legends

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly exploring the idea of launching an IPL-style cricket league exclusively for retired cricket legends. This comes after several former cricketers expressed interest in participating in a competitive, multi-city, auction-based league.
Cricketers’ Request for a Legends League
- Proposal: Former players have approached BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, requesting the establishment of a new league modeled after the Indian Premier League (IPL).
- Format: The proposed league would feature city-based franchise teams, similar to the IPL, with players being selected through an auction process.
- Global Popularity: Legends leagues, such as the World Championship and Legends League Cricket, have gained popularity worldwide. The BCCI’s version could become the third major cricket league in India, following the IPL and the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
BCCI’s Response
- Official Statement: A BCCI official confirmed that they have received a proposal from former cricketers. However, the idea is still in its preliminary stages and has not yet been approved.
- Timing: If the league is approved, it is unlikely to take place this season. The BCCI would need to work on various aspects to ensure the league’s success, and with the IPL 2025 mega auction on the horizon, the earliest possible start date for the Legends League could be next year.
