BCCI release three pacers during ongoing BGT series

In a major update during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly released three Indian pacers — Mukesh Kumar, Yash Dayal, and Navdeep Saini — from the squad. The decision allows the trio, part of the travelling reserves, to return to India and participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT), scheduled to be held between December 21 and January 18, 2025.

Focus on Match Practice for Domestic Tournament

According to Times of India, the move is aimed at ensuring the pacers gain match practice and remain in rhythm ahead of future assignments.

  • Yash Dayal has reportedly already returned to his hometown to prepare for the domestic 50-over tournament, where he will represent Uttar Pradesh.
  • Mukesh Kumar, who was a standout performer for India A, claiming 11 wickets at an average of 16.18 against Australia A, will play for Bengal.
  • Navdeep Saini, who participated in India’s practice games earlier in the series, will represent Delhi.

Mohammed Shami’s Inclusion for Bengal

Additionally, Mohammed Shami, who was speculated to make a comeback in the BGT squad, has now been included in Bengal’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad, further confirming his absence from the Australia tour.

BCCI’s Strategic Move

The decision reflects BCCI’s intent to balance workload management while ensuring these bowlers remain in competitive form. With Jasprit Bumrah leading India’s bowling attack in the BGT, the absence of the reserve pacers will not impact the core squad. However, their performance in the domestic competition will keep them ready for future opportunities.

The Vijay Hazare Trophy will provide a key platform for Mukesh Kumar, Yash Dayal, and Navdeep Saini to impress selectors and further stake their claim for India’s upcoming limited-overs matches.
