MS Dhoni to confirm CSK future on October 30, just before IPL retention: Report

MS Dhoni’s future with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) remains uncertain as reports suggest he will confirm his availability for IPL 2025 only on October 30. According to Sports Tak, this comes just a day before IPL teams are set to announce their retention lists. The decision was initially expected to come on October 28 after Dhoni’s meeting with the CSK CEO.

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, is now eligible to play as an uncapped player, raising questions about whether he will return for another IPL season. Despite handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad in 2024, Dhoni’s presence in the team is significant, given his leadership and influence.

Over the years, Dhoni has been CSK’s most valuable player, leading the team in 235 matches and winning 142 of them. Under his leadership, CSK has secured five IPL titles, the joint-most by any team. Even at 43, Dhoni contributed in the 2024 season, scoring 161 runs in 14 matches, with an impressive average of 73 and smashing 13 sixes.

If Dhoni opts out, CSK will likely prioritize retaining current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, alongside players like Matheesha Pathirana, Rachin Ravindra, and Ravindra Jadeja. Simarjeet Singh could also be considered as an uncapped pick for the upcoming season.
