New Zealand’s hopes for Women’s ODI World Cup qualification hinge on India series

The India vs New Zealand ODI series begins on October 24 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The three-match series holds significant importance for New Zealand as they aim to secure a spot in the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.
Although New Zealand recently celebrated their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup win, they now face a challenge in the Women’s Championship. India, as the hosts of the next ODI World Cup, have already qualified for the tournament, but New Zealand’s qualification is not guaranteed.
Currently, New Zealand holds the sixth and final automatic qualification spot with just six matches left in the Women’s Championship cycle. Their performance in the upcoming series against India could determine whether they make it to the World Cup automatically. If they lose, their spot could be taken by the West Indies, who are just four points behind.
With Australia, England, and South Africa already securing their places, New Zealand’s position is under threat. They have suffered recent losses to Sri Lanka and South Africa, along with being swept 3-0 by England and West Indies.
Sophie Devine, leading the New Zealand side, has a tough task ahead. A poor performance in the upcoming series against India and later Australia could push New Zealand into the qualifier tournament, a position no team wants to be in. Meanwhile, the West Indies will play three ODIs against England in June next year, giving them a chance to surpass New Zealand if the Kiwis falter.
The next few matches are critical for New Zealand’s World Cup dreams.
