T20 World Cup 2024: Australia officially qualifies for Super Eights after win against Namibia

Australia secured their place in the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup 2024 with a comprehensive 9-wicket victory over Namibia at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Wednesday.

Chasing a modest target of 73 runs, Australia made light work of the chase, wrapping up the game in just the sixth over after a dominant performance with the ball.

David Warner (20 runs off 8 balls) and Travis Head (34* off 17 balls) got Australia off to a flying start, stitching a 21-run opening partnership. Though Warner fell early, skipper Mitchell Marsh (18* off 9 balls) ensured there were no hiccups, with all three Australian batters striking at over 200.

Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Australia’s decision paid dividends as their bowlers ran through Namibia’s batting lineup. Opener Nikolaas Davin (2 off 7) fell early, and only captain Gerhard Erasmus (36 off 43) showed some resistance as Namibia crossed 50 in the 14th over after losing 8 wickets.

Adam Zampa was the pick of the Australian bowlers, claiming 4 wickets for just 12 runs in his four overs to become the first Australian to reach 100 T20I wickets. Josh Hazlewood and Marcus Stoinis also chipped in with two wickets each.

The comprehensive victory, coupled with other results, means Australia have qualified for the Super Eights with a game to spare. Their dominant all-round display will serve as a warning to their opponents in the next round.
