Zimbabwe emerges as a contender to host 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup
Zimbabwe has unexpectedly emerged as a strong contender to host the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, originally scheduled to take place in Bangladesh. Political unrest in Bangladesh has led to uncertainty about the venue, prompting the International Cricket Council (ICC) to consider alternative locations.
Why Zimbabwe?
- Previous Hosting Experience: Zimbabwe has a proven track record, having successfully hosted two ODI World Cup Qualifiers in recent years. This experience has shown the country’s capability to organize international cricket events.
- Favorable Weather: October, when the tournament is scheduled, is summer in Zimbabwe. This means minimal chances of rain interruptions, which is a significant advantage over other countries like India and Sri Lanka, where weather could be a concern.
- Cost Efficiency: Hosting the tournament in Zimbabwe could be less expensive than in other contenders like the UAE. Additionally, Zimbabwe offers vibrant and enthusiastic crowds, especially with the involvement of school children, adding to the tournament’s atmosphere.
Other Contenders:
- UAE: Another potential host, the UAE, offers larger stadiums but at a higher cost.
- India: India has withdrawn its interest due to the monsoon season and to avoid hosting too many world events, especially with the Women’s ODI World Cup scheduled there in 2025.
ICC’s Decision
The ICC board is set to decide on the final host nation on August 20. If Zimbabwe is chosen, it will be a historic achievement for the country and a significant boost for women’s cricket in the region.
This unexpected opportunity could put Zimbabwe on the global cricketing map, showcasing its passion and infrastructure for the sport.
