Chappell-Hadlee Trophy expands to include T20I series between New Zealand and Australia

The prestigious Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, traditionally awarded for bilateral ODI series between cricketing giants Australia and New Zealand, will now also be up for grabs in T20I contests between the trans-Tasman rivals. This expansion of the trophy’s scope will commence with the upcoming three-match T20I series, set to kick off in Wellington on Wednesday.

Previously, the trophy was exclusively associated with ODI clashes between the two nations. However, the addition of T20Is to the mix ensures that the rivalry extends across multiple formats, providing increased visibility and significance to the coveted trophy.

Sir Richard Hadlee, representing his family, expressed enthusiasm for the new development, highlighting the revised conditions that ensure the trophy remains at stake over a longer duration, thereby maintaining the relevance of every match.

Greg Chappell, echoing similar sentiments, lauded the decision to include bilateral T20I series in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy framework, emphasizing the opportunity for young players to showcase their talent and compete for the prestigious honor.

Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley emphasized the significance of the Australia-New Zealand rivalry in world cricket, noting that the expanded scope of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy will enhance its relevance in the years ahead.

New Zealand Cricket chief Scott Weenink underscored the importance of honoring cricketing history while embracing the future, emphasizing the value of the trophy for players, fans, and future generations.

The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, first contested in December 2004, has witnessed memorable battles between the two cricketing powerhouses. With Australia holding the trophy seven times and New Zealand clinching it four times, the inclusion of T20Is adds a new dimension to this enduring rivalry, promising exciting encounters for cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
