Harmanpreet Kaur Encourages Domestic Players to Shine in WPL for T20 World Cup Call-Up

India’s domestic cricketers have a golden opportunity to shine on the big stage and earn a call-up to the national team for the upcoming T20 World Cup, according to Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of both India and the Mumbai Indians.

With the second season of the Women’s IPL (WPL) on the horizon, Harmanpreet emphasized the significance of the tournament as a platform for domestic players to showcase their talent. “WPL is the kind of platform where domestic players will get opportunities,” she stated during a pre-season press conference in Mumbai. “If they do well here then it means they’re kind of ready for international cricket.”

Highlighting the impact of WPL performances on national team selections, Harmanpreet cited the example of left-arm spinner Saika Ishaque, who made a remarkable debut in the inaugural season, leading to her inclusion in the Indian team later that year. “Last year we saw Saika do well and other players too who were picked later in the team,” she noted. “Later on, they got opportunities in the Indian team. So it’s a good platform for players because if you do well here, you can get picked [for the Indian team].”

Echoing Harmanpreet’s sentiments, Mumbai Indians’ bowling coach Jhulan Goswami emphasized the team’s commitment to nurturing young talent from domestic cricket. “Our scout team is working really hard to bring them here and we choose the best for our combination and all our quality cricketers,” Goswami said. “They just need a little bit of support from our end and this platform.”

With the T20 World Cup looming later this year, the WPL presents a crucial opportunity for aspiring cricketers to make their mark and catch the selectors’ attention. As players gear up for the upcoming season, the stage is set for the emergence of new stars and the continuation of India’s cricketing legacy.
