Rohit Sharma reminds media: Rahane and Pujara haven’t retired, doors open for Team India return
India captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media following the drawn third Test against Australia in Brisbane, where questions about Ravi Ashwin’s retirement led to further discussions on senior players Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. Rohit Sharma, in his usual candid and humorous style, reminded the media that both Rahane and Pujara haven’t retired and could still make a return to the Indian team.
While reflecting on the absence of experienced players, Rohit expressed how their presence would be missed. “The experience of players like Ashwin, Rahane, and Pujara is something we always valued. At times, when you look left or right on the field, you miss their presence,” Rohit said. However, the skipper was quick to clarify with a smile, “Marwaoge kya? Rahane and Pujara haven’t retired yet.”
Rohit elaborated further, saying he frequently meets Rahane in Mumbai, while Pujara, who remains in Rajkot, is a little harder to find. Despite that, Rohit mentioned they remain in touch and share conversations about the game.
The India captain also emphasized that the door to the national team remains open for everyone, including experienced players like Rahane and Pujara. He highlighted that performance remains the key criterion for selection, and anyone can make a comeback if they perform well.
Rohit concluded by saying that while the current team is transitioning, having experienced players like Ashwin retire reminds the younger players of the importance of consistency and longevity in the game. “Both Rahane and Pujara still have a lot to offer, and if they perform, they can always return to the squad,” Rohit reiterated.
The comments bring clarity amid speculation regarding Rahane and Pujara’s future with the Indian team, as Rohit continues to navigate Team India’s transition phase while keeping doors open for veterans.
