T20 World Cup 2024: Super 8 qualification scenario for Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and England

Top teams struggle to find their spot in Super 8 qualifications.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has delivered several surprises in its first two weeks. Top teams, including past champions and finalists, are struggling to advance to the Super 8 stage.

So far, 21 matches have been played, and the 2009 champions Pakistan, 2014 champions Sri Lanka, two-time winners and defending champions England, along with 2021 finalists New Zealand, are finding it difficult to make it past the group stage.

Pakistan is on the brink of elimination after losses to the USA and India. England’s opening match against Scotland was washed out due to rain, putting Jos Buttler’s team in a precarious position. New Zealand lost their opening game against Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka lost close matches to South Africa and Bangladesh, putting their chances in jeopardy.

Pakistan’s Qualification Scenarios
Pakistan needs to win their remaining two matches against Canada and Ireland by large margins. They also need Ireland to defeat the USA significantly and hope that India beats Canada and the USA comfortably.

England’s Qualification Scenarios
England must win their remaining matches against Oman and Namibia by significant margins and hope Australia defeats Scotland convincingly. Their qualification may come down to net run rate between them and Scotland.

New Zealand’s Qualification Scenarios
New Zealand must win against West Indies, PNG, and Uganda. If Afghanistan beats West Indies, and New Zealand also defeats West Indies, the Kiwis will advance. However, if the West Indies beat both Afghanistan and New Zealand, New Zealand will be knocked out.

 Sri Lanka’s Qualification Scenarios
Sri Lanka needs to win their remaining matches against the Netherlands and Nepal by large margins. They also need the Netherlands to beat Bangladesh. If Bangladesh beats Nepal, three teams—Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Bangladesh—will have two points each, and the net run rate will determine which teams advance.

The tournament has been unpredictable, and these teams must perform exceptionally in their remaining matches to secure a spot in the Super 8 stage.
