England’s white-ball coach Matthew Mott steps down after World Cup disappointments

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced that Matthew Mott, the head coach of England’s white-ball cricket team, has stepped down from his position. Mott’s departure comes after a challenging period for the team, which struggled in recent international tournaments.
Matthew Mott took over as the white-ball coach in May 2022. He initially led the team to success, winning the T20 World Cup in 2022. However, England’s performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup was disappointing, as they finished seventh, winning only three games against Bangladesh, the Netherlands, and Pakistan. In the 2024 T20 World Cup, they reached the semi-finals but were defeated by champions India.
Rob Key, England’s Managing Director, thanked Mott for his contributions, saying, “Matthew has been instrumental in our recent successes, and we are grateful for his hard work and dedication. He leaves with a World Cup win to his name, joining a select group of coaches who have achieved this feat with England.”
Mott expressed that after three intense World Cup cycles, it was time for a new direction for the team. “This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right time for the team’s future success,” Mott said.
Former England opener Marcus Trescothick will step in as interim head coach, working alongside white-ball captain Jos Buttler. Key expressed confidence in Trescothick, highlighting his respect within the team and strong partnership with Buttler.
