Marnus Labuschagne named Queensland Bulls Captain for 2024-25 season

Star batter Marnus Labuschagne has been named the new captain of the Queensland Bulls for the 2024-25 season, replacing Test opener Usman Khawaja. This decision by Queensland cricket officials positions Labuschagne favorably for a future Australian leadership role.

Usman Khawaja steps down as the Bulls’ fourth-longest-serving captain, having led the team in 37 Sheffield Shield and 33 one-day matches. Following in the footsteps of Jimmy Maher, Stuart Law, and James Hopes, Khawaja’s tenure as captain has been notable.

Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson remarked that this is the “perfect time” for Labuschagne to demonstrate his leadership skills, as he is currently playing country cricket for Glamorgan in England. Svenson emphasized that it is an ideal opportunity for Labuschagne to gain experience at both first-class and one-day levels.

Labuschagne is no stranger to the captaincy role, having led the Bulls in matches against South Australia last season in Khawaja’s absence. Reflecting on his appointment, Labuschagne expressed his pride and commitment to the team, saying, “I’m greatly honoured to be appointed Queensland captain, as I know how much the Bulls mean to the fans around the state.”

As Queensland prepares for the upcoming season, Labuschagne’s leadership will be crucial in steering the team towards success and potentially paving the way for his future role in Australian cricket.
