Mohammed Shami prioritizes fitness before international return

India’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami is focused on regaining full fitness before making his return to international cricket. Shami, who last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, has been recovering from an ankle injury and is taking his time to ensure he does not rush back too soon.
Speaking at the Cricket Association of Bengal’s annual awards ceremony, Shami said, “I am working hard to make a comeback soon because I know I’ve been out of action for a while. However, I want to make sure I feel no discomfort when I return.”
Shami emphasized that his goal is to return stronger and avoid the risk of re-injury, whether it is for upcoming series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, or the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. He has already started bowling again but will not take any chances until he is fully fit.
Reports suggest that Shami might test his fitness by playing in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy matches, with potential appearances in games against Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in October. He hinted at the possibility of playing domestic cricket before returning to the international stage.
Shami, known for his key role in India’s pace attack, remains confident about India’s chances in the upcoming series, stating, “We are the favourites, they should be worried.”
