Charith Asalanka named Sri Lanka’s new T20 captain
Sri Lanka has appointed Charith Asalanka as their new T20 captain ahead of the upcoming series against India. Asalanka takes over from Wanindu Hasaranga, who stepped down following Sri Lanka’s exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Asalanka, who previously captained Sri Lanka in two T20 matches against Bangladesh earlier this year, will lead the team in a three-match T20I series against India. The series marks a fresh start for both sides, with India also introducing a new captain, Suryakumar Yadav.

Hasaranga remains in the squad alongside other key players such as Maheesh Theekshana, Dinesh Chandimal, and Dasun Shanaka. Sri Lanka Cricket has not announced any changes to captaincy for other formats; Kusal Mendis continues as ODI captain, while Dhananjaya de Silva leads in Test matches.
The T20 series will commence on Saturday at Pallekele in Kandy, followed by three ODIs at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo starting August 2.
